There was a time when you could count on the Superbowl, Olympics and the Oscars to bring some outstanding advertising creative work. Real smart cutting-edge stuff. There was the Mean Joe Green Coke spot, Apple's 1984, some great American Express work during the Olympics, etc. Even the Oscars could be counted on for delivering quality 30 second content aimed at the large female audience. Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
We're not exactly sure what happened. Did the media buys get so expensive that there wasn't enough money left for the big ideas and production houses to rock? Did the audiences disappear and make it not as worthwhile for advertisers to pony up the big bucks? There's still great work being done. We just fear that more and more it's being done outside of the once mecca of advertising, the US.
